I think it sounds like a great idea, particularly if you have enough experience of boats to know you'll enjoy making one your home. What kind of design are you thinking of? Houseboats are very common in some parts of the world, though I think the areas they can be moored are restricted.
I am very envious of your plans. Maybe one day when we have empty nest syndrome this will be on the agenda. I'm not sure I could do it all year long but it would be very nice in the warmer months.
We want to make the most of our post work lives while we are both reasonably fit and able, so a houseboat is indeed our plan. We have our eye on one that could easily be modified to suit us - as we particularly want a bigger deck at the back.
